Curriuculum for all ages and belt levels

Tigers (4 – 6 years old) Curriculum

This 1 – 3 year program teaches essential listening, attention, respect, discipline, body control and coordination skills in a martial arts format. The curriculum rotates class activities weekly and themes monthly. Class plans follow a specific theme with karate skills, life lessons and activities that connect to the monthly theme. Second and Third year participants are taught more complex and challenging skills and are expected to perform at a higher skill and attention level

Students may be eligible to move into the Junior program (two 45 minute classes per week) at or around age 6. The instructors will advise you about when that change of programs should take place. Tiger students who move up to the Junior program will keep their current belt for a short period of time and then be reassessed for the appropriate Junior Belt.

Junior 6 – 12 years old - Beginner Curriculum for White, Yellow, Orange and Green Belts

Isshin Ryu karate 15 upper body basics (punches, strikes and blocks) – in place

Isshin Ryu karate 15 lower body basics (kicks, stretches and exercises) – on line

Basic Self Defense moves 1-12

Kihon Katas 1 – 5 (Kihon katas 1 and 2 must be learned for promotion to yellow belt)

4 corner kata

Naihanchi kata (complete kata performed for blue belt)

Nunchaku - swinging, blocking, striking and combinations

Bo staff strikes and blocks

Breakfalls – back, side, forward roll

Sparring – basic offensive and defensive skills, combinations, limited sparring

Extra kicks – sliding up, back leg, and in place (instant) - roundhouse kick, side kick, hook kick

Extra strikes – in air, on pads, against partner (show control) - backfist, reverse punch, ridgehand

Junior 7 – 12 years old - Intermediate Curriculum for Blue, Advanced Blue, Purple and Advanced Purple Belts

Isshin Ryu karate 15 upper body basics (punches, strikes and blocks) – with partner, stepping and against pads

Isshin Ryu karate 15 lower body basics (kicks, stretches and exercises) – with partner and against pads

Basic Self Defense moves 1-12 with takedowns, sweeps and striking moves

Naihanchi kata

Seisan kata (1/3 of kata taught each month – complete kata must be performed for brown belt test)

Wansu kata (1/3 of kata taught each month – complete kata must be performed for brown belt test)

Bo staff combinations and partner drills

Escrima (stick fighting) – single sticks - sets 1 - 6

Sparring – intermediate offensive and defensive skills, combinations; limited, free and point sparring

Basic Self Defense moves 1-12 – reaction drills in line, circle attacks and against padded attacker

Tokumine no kun (Bo 1 kata) - (1/3 of kata taught each month – complete kata must be performed for junior black belt stripe test)

Chinto kata - (1/3 of kata taught each month – complete kata must be performed for junior black belt stripe test)

Sunsu kata - (1/3 of kata taught each month – complete kata must be performed for junior black belt stripe test)

Kusanku sai - (1/3 of kata taught each month – complete kata must be performed for junior black belt stripe test)

Sword – drawing, sheathing, striking, blocking, combinations, partner drills and padded sword fighting

Sparring – advanced offensive and defensive skills, combinations; limited, free and point sparring

Teen/Adult Curriculum

The Teen/Adult martial arts curriculum for all belt levels will include:

• Isshin Ryu karate upper and lower body basics 1 - 15 – solo, partner, bag, modified

• Martial arts philosophy lessons, history, terminology, procedures and etiquette

• Physical conditioning – strength, flexibility, cardiovascular, coordination, balance, etc.

• Self defense techniques, skills, combination and sets

• Sparring skills, techniques, tactics and strategies

• Weapons basics, combinations and applications

• Breakfalls – forward roll, back, side, other

Year one – White, Yellow, Orange, Green Belt White belt
